Margaret Ellis received her B.A. at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in French language and English literature (1968), followed by Professional Teacher Education (1969), also at UBC. After teaching in Germany, she obtained a B.Sc. in kinesiology and an M.Sc. in Extension Education from the University of Guelph, specializing in Communication and Technology.
She started her career in Information Technology at the University of Guelph in 1987 as a software support coordinator for a distributed computer conferencing system developed at the university. After moving to Vancouver in 1989, she worked in information technology at UBC, first as a Network Analyst and then as the Director of the Centre for Educational Technology, focused on implementing computer technology into learning and instruction across the university. She subsequently managed a technical writing team for the company, WebCT, that produced instructional software for universities.
In 2001, she earned a Certificate in Bioinformatics from the Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops, and worked in bioinformatics for various projects until 2009, when she became the Project Manager of the 6-year Working on Walls CREATE project, a collaborative training project centred in the Michael Smith Laboratories at UBC.
